What if you knew someone that helped change peoples lives for the better? Would you tell others about this person? For a long time I have struggled to tell this story, maybe it would be seen as patronizing or self serving, or maybe a sense of embarrassment in the frank description of my life prior to my training with Maryellen. I suppose now is a good a time as any. A little over three years ago I found myself pretty much out of life. My son had finished college and moved far away. The last remaining member of my family had died and my one passion in life was motorsports. Unfortunately, my overweight and out of shape body began telling me my lackluster performances were a signal that this was the end of the line for my only true passion. My overeating and drinking increased and my wife was concerned for my physical and psychological health. Blood pressure medication, stomach meds as well as a good amount of pain killers were a staple of my poor diet. I had long been an executive in the medical business and the challenge as well as the desire had long since passed, every day was a carbon copy of the last. Even though I had maintained a health club membership my “workouts” consisted of a few minutes on the bike followed by many minutes socializing. I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that my racing career was over. One morning while discussing a popular book I encountered Maryellen. Over a short period of time we became acquainted and we often discussed my fitness and health shortcomings. One particular morning Maryellen presented me with her business card and told me I should consider her as a trainer. Reluctantly, I agreed and a training regimen was established. A few life changing months followed. Regular training sessions, nutritional advise and counseling and long walks with positive reinforcement conversations were now my staple diet. Maryellen’s specialized training even included specific exercises she personally designed to assist in certain positions in motorcycle racing, for concentration, focus and lean muscle mass stamina she introduced me to yoga, to this day I still credit yoga with a good deal of my success. The following spring I registered for the first race of the season, 55lbs lighter, free of medications and alcohol , strong and confident I felt this was my best chance ever, I had never finished better than 28th in this event. I was elated to finish 3rd, and the rest of the season followed, two wins, numerous top 10 finishes and a regional championship to boot. Before leaving for the first event Maryellen sent me a card that read, “Its Never too Late to be What You Might Have Been” to this day I have the card in my office under the picture of me crossing the finish line. In closing Maryellen Fowler is a high quality athletic trainer and life coach, she helped change my life and allowed me to realize my abilities. At 56 years old, that’s quite an achievement, I will never be able to thank her enough
